Troopers Arrest Man for Drug Dealing Following Traffic Stop

Yesterday the Delaware State Police arrested 53-year-old Anthony Whalen of Newark, Delaware for drug dealing after a traffic stop that took place in Newark.

On August 25, 2023, at approximately 5:14 p.m., patrol troopers saw a black 2005 Nissan Maxima traveling on Stanton Christiana Road with an invalid registration. The troopers stopped the Maxima on Churchmans Road near Stanton Christiana Road and contacted the driver and only occupant, identified as Anthony Whalen. Troopers saw drugs in plain view on the passenger seat, and Whalen was taken into custody without incident. Troopers searched Whalen and found MDMA (ecstasy) pills, psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia in his shorts pockets. Troopers also searched Whalen’s car and found Naloxone packets, methamphetamine, more marijuana, THC edibles and vaporizers, and prescription pills. Altogether troopers recovered the following:

  • Approximately 61 ecstasy pills
  • Approximately 20.66 grams of psilocybin mushrooms
  • Approximately 115.64 grams (over 4 ounces) of marijuana
  • Approximately 30 packets of Naloxone
  • Approximately 4.64 grams of methamphetamine
  • Approximately 586.64 grams of THC edibles and vaporizers
  • Approximately 40 prescription pills

Whalen was taken to Troop 6 and charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance in a Tier 3 Quantity (Felony)
  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance in a Tier 2 Quantity (Felony)
  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Felony)
  • Possession of Marijuana Other Than Personal Use Quantity – 2 counts
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance – 3 counts
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Traffic offenses

Whalen was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on $29,600 unsecured bond.
