Investigation Leads to Drug and Weapon Arrest

Delaware State Police arrested 45-year-old Jermaine Barnhart of New Castle, DE on drug and weapon charges following an investigation at a New Castle area motel on Wednesday night.

On March 30th, 2022 at approximately 11:40 p.m., members of the Delaware State Police New Castle County Governor’s Task Force responded to the Superlodge, located at 1213 West Avenue, New Castle, DE after receiving information that Jermaine Barnhart, a registered Tier 2 sex offender, was residing there despite registering as homeless. Task Force detectives made contact with Barnhart in a motel room, and immediately observed drug paraphernalia in plain view. Troopers also detected the odor of marijuana emitting from the room’s interior. A subsequent search of his motel room led to the discovery of a .22 caliber Model 9 revolver, six rounds of .22 caliber ammunition, approximately 6 grams of crack cocaine, approximately 3 grams of marijuana, approximately 3 prescription pills, a digital scale, drug paraphernalia, and over $1,500 in suspected drug proceeds. Barnhart has prior felony convictions and is a person prohibited from possessing firearms and/or ammunition.

Barnhart was transported to Troop 2 and charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm While in Possession of a Controlled Substance (Felony)
  • Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Felony)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Tier 1 Quantity (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Barnhart was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court # 11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $112,501 cash bond.
